Competence Platform KI.NRW

The central point of contact for artificial intelligence in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Competence Platform KI.NRW supports to develop North Rhine-Westphalia into a nationwide leading location for applied artificial intelligence (AI) and is establishing the federal state in international networks. As the central organization for artificial intelligence, KI.NRW combines top-level research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The task of the competence platform is to support the transfer of AI applications to industry, to establish the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia as a leading region for professional qualification in the field of AI, to strengthen AI research and to promote social dialogue. In doing so, KI.NRW puts people and their ethical principles at the center of the design of artificial intelligence. KI.NRW is funded by the state ministries and is managed by one of Europe’s leading research institutes in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in Sankt Augustin.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart
By developing innovative technologies, North Rhine-Westphalia is expanding its role as a central location for applied artificial intelligence. The certification is intended to ensure the reliable and responsible use of AI applications for the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany and also serve as a European model.

Dirk Hecker
In order to strengthen the economy in NRW in the field of AI, we promote the development of competence on a broad basis – in companies, in education, in advanced training and on a social level. With the »Data Science Learning Laboratory«, we are creating a digital platform for interactively teaching artificial intelligence technologies to experts in companies. We are also starting with vocational education and further education – thanks to new qualification formats, future mechatronics engineers will be able to learn how to program and construct industrial robots »hands-on.
Dr. Dirk Hecker │ Deputy head of the Fraunhofer IAIS Institute & co-initiator of KI.NRW
Nicole Langrock
We want to intensively shape the social transformation that the rapid development of AI technology entails. It is therefore important to provide interested parties from business, science and society with suitable support so that they can also become active. The focus of KI.NRW is the interlinking of research with companies from NRW. In several flagship projects, they are collaborating together to solve socially relevant problems and our future of AI.
Nicole Langrock │ Managing Director KI.NRW
NRW is already an important European location with many years of expertise in the research and development of artificial intelligence – both in the scientific and corporate environment. In order to further expand this pioneering position, it is essential to bundle the various competencies, establish them in the network and make AI highlights from NRW internationally visible – for example through our experimental environments and flagship projects in various sectors such as mobility, agriculture, production and health.
Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel │ Head of Fraunhofer IAIS & Professor University of Bonn
Intelligence is one of the key technologies for North Rhine-Westphalia as a research and business location. In research and teaching, we have great potential to successfully develop artificial intelligence and to put it to use. The trustworthy support of people through AI systems is crucial for society. That is what we are working on!
Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen │ Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia
